I am one person working alone on Uterus Savers in the hope this website will help women save their uteruses from aggressive surgery when options are available.
Women in my family have had hysterectomies to treat endometriosis and uterine fibroids. In 1993, I learned I was developing fibroids and became terrified at the prospect of hysterectomy. I was 27 years old. In 1997, I nearly died from anemia caused by heavy bleeding brought on by fibroids and my doctor told me I would be dead within the week if I did not “do something.” I had a myomectomy to remove the fibroids six days later. My uterus was 19 cm and I had 7 fibroids removed.
Ten years after my first myomectomy, I was facing surgery again and I had a second myomectomy to remove 10 fibroids that ranged in size from 2 cm to 16 cm. I am now 50 years old and I have more fibroids. If I have to have another surgery, I will have another myomectomy. I value my uterus for both health and pleasure.
Many women want to keep their uteruses for life and they should have that right. An estimated 60% of all women will have a hysterectomy before they are 60 years old. This statistic is alarming! One reason for performing hysterectomy is uterine fibroids. Uterus Savers is devoted to helping women learn about uterine fibroids and treatment options.
